Artist's Statement

I’m interested in the interplay between the written word and visual imagery, and exploring how these two modes of communication may be used together to enhance the art of storytelling.  My work combines large-scale staged photographs with audio recordings and text versions of short stories that reveal more about the characters inhabiting the pictures.

The narrative thread is what draws me in whenever I look at paintings or photographs.  I’m fascinated by images of people in scenes torn from real life.  I wonder who they are and start imagining stories about them immediately.  What would they say if they could speak to me?  What’s happening behind the facade?

The goal is to discover some aspect of my characters’ inner lives and daily challenges, to explore their experiences with love and relationships and be drawn in to particular moments in their lives.  I create these people and their stories and construct the images in which they appear.  The photos are meant to look as raw and untouched as possible, similar to the snapshots we all take of family members and friends.

I hope audiences engage with these works and then leave them intrigued, speculating about what might happen next.  Ideally, my characters’ stories will be continued and expanded in the minds of everyone who is introduced to them.
